Becoming a Bridge Builder

On Sunday mornings I have been talking about becoming a bridge builder. It is one of those sermon series that has gained a lot of attention in the church, which I pastor.  I think it is struck a chord with several, and for good reason.  For we live in a world that wants to build walls and not build bridges.

What I find in the Scriptures is that the apostle Paul was an incredible bridge builder.  Again and again he sought to bring reconciliation between people and the Lord vertically, and between people horizontally with one another.

I think the principle of Scripture teaches us that it is downright impossible to be right with God and not right with one another.  Yet so many live their lives using and then abusing relationships within family, society, and even the church.

I have long been told and read about the way we step on one another on the corporate ladder, however no one seems to address how we step on one another inside the church.  It is a taboo subject.  I guess we think if we stick our heads in the sand just go away.  I'm here to remind you that it won't.  We must address it, and to address it we must acknowledge it, and to acknowledge it we must be honest about it.

Yesterday, I talked about becoming a bridge builder.  And then last night I opened up the church floor to questions and answers, comments and insights that people had.   It was a very interesting and rewarding time. One of the questions that came up went something like this:  What happens when you identify two individuals who both love the Lord, but do not love one another, and what happens when you try to build a bridge between them and they do not walk across?

I tried my best on the spot to answer that question.  My answer was something to this effect:  First, we need to certainly bathe the situation in prayer, prior, during and after.  Beyond that I emphasized that we need to let God be God.  Meaning, we cannot force people to reconcile.  If you remember the book of Philemon, Paul was pretty clear:

v8-9 Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do,  yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus—

Paul could have been forceful demanding from the law reconciliation be accomplished, but rather Paul was pleading on the basis of love.  That is how we should be as well.  There are times in our lives when it seems as if the relationship has no hope, we must be consistent and faithful to take that relationship to the Lord and allow him to rebuild it, renew it and restore it.

One of the things that I did not mention that I thought about after we closed the service was this:  We should make every effort to be very careful that if we cannot pick the fruit we do not bruise the fruit.

God wants us to be fruitful in our faith, walk and witness.  Part of being fruitful in this journey is being wise as we deal with one another.  Wise enough to know that if someone is not ready we cannot force them.  We cannot force them into the kingdom, and we cannot force them into reconciliation.

But at any given moment it is possible to bruise those in which we seek to win over.   That is where a wise ambassador knows when and where to advocate for what is true, pure and holy.  A wise advocate also understands that God might use someone else to bring about the reconciliation that we so worked for and pray for.

If those you love are not ready to accept the invite to walk across the bridge than keep living your faith in steadfast devotion and keep living for another opportunity to share later.

I end with this thought:  We should also live with an expectation that GOD WILL WORK!  Too many times we live our lives in the negative not the positive and we wrongly assume redemption is not possible.  As followers of Christ, we should live with an expectation that He not only can work in every situation but that He wants to.

Becoming a Bridge Builder
Philemon

Theme: Bridge Builders learn to construct not obstruct.  As a follower of Jesus Christ we should seek to build bridges of reconciliation.

  1. Bridge Builders See the Good

II.   Bridge Builders construct roadways between others and not walls that obstruct

Principles to become a Bridge Builder:

1.  Operate from Love Not Law

Statements of Truth:
  • When we build a bridge it must be done in Christ,  otherwise it is in vain

  • If you are brutal when you are right, you are no longer right but wrong.

  • Love has nothing to do with the question of IF we we will act.   Love is about HOW we will act

  • Love pleads, while Law demands

2.  Believe that God changes People

TRANSFORMED HEARTS, RENEWED MINDS, ALIGNED LIVES
Roman 12:2 & 2 Corinthians 3:18

Statement of Truth:
To be controlled by the Word of God is to be controlled by the Spirit of God.  To be controlled by the Spirit of God is the same as being controlled by the Word of God.

Theme:  The number one goal of our christian life is to be like Christ!

Question to Consider:  Most Americans call themselves spiritual people and Christians. Yet, why is spiritual transformation so rare and fleeting?

Four Common Barriers to Transformation: {According to George Barna}
  • A lack of commitment
  • Unwillingness to fully repent
  • Confusing activity for growth
  • Failure to engage in genuine accountable community

Definition [def-uh-nish-uh n]: The Renewing of the Mind…
It is the adjustment of the moral and spiritual vision and thinking to the mind of God, which is designed to have a transforming affect upon the life.

Quotable:  “Based on Romans 12:2, what then do we do in obedience to this truth? We join the Holy Spirit in His precious and all important work. We pursue Christ-exalting truth and we pray for truth-embracing humility.” John Piper

TRANSFORMED HEARTS, RENEWED MINDS, and LIVES  {part 2}
Romans 12:2

Statement of Truth:
Our Hearts Can Be Transformed

  1. A CHALLENGE THAT’S IMPERATIVE

Word of Warning:
It is not uncommon for unbelievers to mask themselves as Christians. Unfortunately, it also is not uncommon for Christians to wear the world’s masks.

II.  A CHANGE THAT IS INTERNAL

Statement of Truth:
Our metamorphosis (change/transformation) is one time (through justification) and ongoing (through sanctification) and is accomplished
by the renewing of the mind.

NOTE THE CHALLENGE:

Without question:  Our Hearts will deceive us!

Tensions in the Text Exist Beyond our Understanding

The tension of of the text is real.  I think much of the tensions exist for a reason.  Many times the reasons are beyond our understanding.

Take the tension of God's election and man’s will.  That tension is real, is it not?

I believe it does exist for a reason, beyond our knowledge.    Here is an amazing truth that we must never forget:  We have all that we need but we do not have all that there is.

What you need to know is this:  God has given this truth clearly to us:  That He has elected us.  The Bible says that no one is saved unless the Spirit draws them.   Remember what Jesus said in John 6:44:   "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day."

Still, the Bible also says, “Whosoever will may come.”  The crazy thing is this: as your coming to the Lord it feels so much to us like we are choosing Him.  It feels like to us that we are deciding to come to church read the Bible and pray.  Yes, somehow it seems to us like we made this decision.

In one real sense you did, for the Bible describes a decision we make,  and it talks in terms of me receiving Him.   For a very clear passage on this I ask you to read  John 1:12.  So the scriptures do speak of my volition.   There is no question the Bible gives to us a clear invitation.  Remember our Lord’s words:  “Come to me,  all of you who are laboring and heavy burdened, and I will give to you rest”

Here is the strange reality:  In the coming to it feels like choosing and in the looking back it looks  a lot more like I was chosen.

The real sad thing about this issues is this:  throughout the recent history of the church this has been a decisive issue.  This issue has divided people of the faith, churches of the kingdom and it has divided theological opinions and minds and hearts for many years.    So here is a sad commentary upon us:  Strife between christians most often germinates in the soil of getting beyond the Bible.

Some churches only talk about God’s election.  they will pound the pulpits as if to pound the truth into the hard heads of the listeners.  Yet other churches others never talk about it.  They act as if it does not ever exist.    Paul neither made it a great issue, nor ignored the fact either.

Listen to What Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4:6  “… Do not go beyond what is written…”

Beloved is that not beautiful?  Do not exceed what is written!  How many times do we fuss and fight over things that are not written in the scriptures?    If I had a dollar for every time that happened in the church, no church in the kingdom of God would ever fall behind in the budget ever again!

If you want to find the stuff that churches and Christians are arguing about the most,  they are arguing about stuff that is not in the Bible.  It is important  that we do not exceed what is written.    Good people and good churches spend large amounts of time and effort and money trying to give clarity where God gave mystery.   We seek to deliver logic rather  than obeying God and giving him our worship.    So many times we are guilty of chasing good logic when what God wants for us  is to simply offer Him  our deepest devotion in worship!

So be careful,  do not go beyond that is written.  I am not suggesting that I do not agree with many of the theological  frameworks built by great  scholars,  nor am I diminishing their work.  I think  in my limited understanding many of the logical inferences makes sense to me,  but I think we should be careful not to exceed what is written in the text.   The church and its pastors should be care  not to solve the tensions that God is given.

Deuteronomy 29:29 says: "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law."

We should not spend our time solving the tensions of the faith that the Bible does not address.  Do you think God has told us everything?    If you do, than your god is too small!  God has not told us everything but everything we need to know!  Peter would say that God has given to us everything that pertains to life and godliness.  We have all we need, but we do not have all that there is.

Here is another tension of the faith: Tongues.

Did you know that in 1 Corinthians 12:30 Paul asks:  Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?   This is  a rhetorical question.   The answer is no.   But then,  just a few chapters later  in 1 Corinthians 14:39 here is what he says:   Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

I mean how clear is that?    Do all?  NO!  But, do Not forbid!    What do we have in the body of Christ?   We have the everyone should camp and the no one can camp!   We have churches that teach you are not saved unless you do.   So, YES, ALL EVERYONE MUST is what we hear.   However we have the other extreme:  We have  others who constantly forbid, and always say no!  It is short of saying practically:  if you do your not saved!

How does that square up with the Bible?

Do all?  NO!   But Do not forbid!  That is the Bible!    The Lord must be looking down at us going: Really I wrote all of this down for you guys!

Now I have my own theological perspectives and reasons for  not promoting the speaking in tongues, and I have my reasons for  emphasizing the sovereignty of God.   But at the end of the day, we must never exceed what is written in the Scriptures!

Here is the deal:   God's word was given to us, so that we would  align our lives with His!
