The Sovereign God

 The Sovereignty of God

Job 1:6-12 & Job 42:7-13

Theme:

God’s sovereignty is one of the most important principles in Christian studies.  When we think about God, we must think right thoughts about God’s power and authority.  God’s sovereignty is a natural consequence of His omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence.

Points to Ponder:

I.               God is in complete control

II.             Mankind gets into trouble when we rebel against God’s sovereignty

III.            God has a perfect will and a permissive will

Call to Action:

a.     Considering God’s Sovereignty: seek Him more

b.     Considering God’s Sovereignty: abandon worldly philosophies

c.     Considering God’s Sovereignty: look for God’s hand at work

Statement of Truth:

In response to the sovereignty of God we must look for God in the ordinary not just the extraordinary

On Your Own:

Keep in mind:  There are no limits to God’s rule. This is part of what it means to be God. He is sovereign over the whole world and everything that happens in it. He is never helpless, never frustrated, never at a loss. And in Christ, God’s awesome, sovereign providence is the place we feel most reverent, most secure, most free. Whenever God acts, he acts in a way that pleases him. God is never constrained to do a thing that he despises. He is never backed into a corner where his only recourse is to do something he hates to do. He does whatever he pleases.  God is sovereign over the universe, salvation, suffering, and in life and death.

Study the following passages:  Psalm 33:10; Job 23:13; Psalm 115:3; Ephesians 1:11; Revelation 19:6; Deuteronomy 30:19; Genesis 50; Lamentations 3:37-38

Psalm 139

God not only created heaven and earth but what we will learn today is that He fills them as well.  This is the All-ness of God and there is no place we can go that God is not already present.

The attributes of God are broken down into two categories:

  1. The communicable attributes of God

  1. The incommunicable attributes of God

I.   Three non-communicable attributes:

a.     God’s Omniscience

c.     God’s Omnipotence

Statement of Truth:

God is everywhere present, and He cannot be contained, and He cannot be escaped.
