Christ Suffers For Me
John 19: 1-8

THEME:  For the hearer to know and appreciate that God has done so much to provide the gift of salvation.

Point To Ponder:  Substitutionary atonement is the heartbeat of the Gospel.  It simply means that Christ died in my place.
 I.  Jesus Was Tortured As He Suffered

Who was Jesus?
  • He was the Christ
  • The Anointed One
  • The Messiah
  • The Son of God

4 views on the atonement:
1.   The ransom theory
2.  The moral influence theory
3.  The governmental theory
4.  The substitution theory

II.  Jesus Was Mocked as He Suffered
  • They mocked His personhood
  • They mocked His kingship
  • They mocked his deity
QUOTE
“Unless you see yourself standing there with the shrieking crowd, full of hostility and hatred for the holy and innocent Lamb of God, you don’t really understand the nature and depth of your sin or the necessity of the cross.”  - C.J. Mahaney

Own Your Own:

This week study the following passages referenced today:
John 19; John 20:30-31; Galatians 1:4; 1 Corinthians 15:3; 1 Peter 3:18; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Isaiah 53; Mark 14:65; Matthew 26 &27; Luke 23:11; Leviticus 24:16

Questions to Consider:
  1. If someone were to ask you: “who is Jesus?”  how would you answer the question?
  2. In what ways can you respond to the love of God directed at your life?
  3. What are you going to do in light of the truth God has given you today?
